The Nursery and Garden Industry Association is the sole representative body for the New Zealand horticulture industry. Its membership consists of growers, retailers and suppliers of dry and green goods, fertilisers. We also offer associate membership to people or businesses with related interests.
The voice of the New Zealand garden industries working together
NGIA is dedicated to furthering the interests and benefits of its members. Over the years it has collectively dealt with common issues and barriers that have affected all in the nursery and garden industry. Some examples are:
-
NGIA made a detailed submission on the Shop Trading Hours Repeal Act, which was later relaxed to allow garden centres to legally resume Sunday trading.
-
The valuation of nursery stock for tax purposes was successfully negotiated with IRD.
-
More recently [and still unresolved] is the Wai 262 claim that members of NGIA have been working on for nearly a decade.
-
NGIA is a signatory to the National Pest Plant Accord.
-
NGIA is recognised by MAF and Biosecurity NZ as a stakeholder on issues of biosecurity, importing and exporting, and is consulted as a result of this recognition.
-
NGIA is in regular dialogue with regional councils on their Regional Pest Management Strategies
This advocacy work is a clear example of the Association adding value to all businesses in our industry and is something that cannot be achieved without the NGIA being the driving force.
In addition, the following initiatives of the Association benefit its members and the industry as a whole:
-
Industry promotion through Go Gardening magazine and the Gardening NZ gift voucher and gift card schemes.
-
Recognising excellence and seeking improvement through an annual awards programme - innovation, young achiever, marketing, retail and nursery awards.
-
Regular communication with members [and industry] through the newsletter and website.
-
Providing tools for business with regular workshops, surveys, and cost reducing benefits available to both grower and retailer streams.
-
Providing networking opportunities with annual conference, regional get-togethers, sector group meetings and revived district councils.
-
Providing opportunities for educating and up-skilling people in the industry through NZHITO and the NZ Trade and Enterprise programme.
-
Plant Trolleys Ltd provides an efficient method of plant transportation around the country.
