The end of Agapanthus praecox in Auckland

2008 February

The Auckland Regional Council is banning Agapanthus praecox in the area they are responsible for and from 1 July 2008 it will no longer be legal to stock, distribute or sell this species. In their view, Agapanthus praecox is a weed due to its ease of propagation and spreads dunes, hillsides, coastal cliffs and bush.

The ARC are now investigating sterile or low fertility cultivars as this form of species is considered to be low risk. However, the identity of individual cultivars is considered to be problematic and it is important that any claims of sterility or substantially reduced fertility be verified by properly conducted trials.

Accordingly, the ARC plans to obtain examples of all varieties that are available and run test trials through Landcare Research to determine which cultivars are a safe alternative. If you are able to assist with supplying agapanthus varieties for trials, please contact Frances on 04 9183511, frances@ngia.co.nz
